Lorinda Pretorius
Artist Biography
Born in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape in 1989. As a young child Lorinda’s passion for art motivated her to become an artist. Her processes and focus drew her to pursue a degree in fine art at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University graduating with a Baccalaureus Technologies degree in Fine Art majoring in Stained Glass.
Lorinda says, “I find great satisfaction in the creative process. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I arrive at the completion of an artwork. The journey of creating is equally important to me. Especially working with glass as a medium, its transparency offers countless opportunities. I frequently use this characteristic in my work. The material allows for manipulation in its solid and liquid form and it is unpredictable in its nature. This, I find very exciting”.
Lorinda works from the paradigm that glass as a medium is superbly malleable and lends itself to conceptual interpretations that only very few existing materials can surpass. In her work, she is single minded in expounding her convictions that glass is a medium fit for contemporary art making. Her works draw on the delicate and fragile nature of her medium to present beauty and strength.
As an up and coming artist, she made the top 10 finalists and won the merit award in the Sasol New Signatures national art competition in 2010. She has participated in various exhibitions. From 2011, she has been involved in and commissioned to execute various public art projects. These public art projects form part of the Route 67 Art Journey in Port Elizabeth.
